Jamie Searles - An Awesome ENC Junior Naturalist Gives Back

Jamison "Jamie" Searles began visiting the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) as a camper when she was in elementary school. Those fond memories and experiences made a huge impact on her.  Now, as a high schooler, Jamie has been an ENC Junior Naturalist for more than three years.  She donates her time to help further the ENC's mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature.

Jamie recently completed another community service project, which she named "Fantastic Plastic," involving the recycling of used plastic bottles.

Over a period of three months, Jamie collected and recycled various used plastic bottles from friends, neighbors, and fellow students. She used the proceeds from that recycling to benefit her mission of serving the community. Most recently, she reached out to the ENC to assist with the purchasing of supplies for our Summer Nature Camp Program.

Through Jamie's "Fantastic Plastic" program, she was able to raise enough money to purchase 6 new musical instruments, 12 safety-scissors, 4 preschool nature books, 12 boxes of triangle-crayons and a fun ladybug play tent!  Jamie has also made contributions to other organizations: the donation of a check to The Red Cross, the purchasing of school supplies for Girls Inc., the purchasing of turkeys on Thanksgiving for the Soup Kitchen, and the purchasing of backpacks for students at the Mapalo Village School in Zambia.

The ENC would like to thank and congratulate Jamie on her tremendous contributions to the community. It is due to efforts like these that the ENC will continue to provide quality education through hands-on experience with nature for many years to come.

Green Tie Affair - Art Exhibit Featured Artists - Wally Pacholka

The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will be hosting its Green Tie Affair in celebration of its 40th Anniversary. The art exhibit for the event will start May 21 and will conclude on June 2, the evening of the event. Many talented local artists will have their works on display.

Wally Pacholka

Wally Pacholka was an accountant by day, but it's his moonlighting "job" where he's always shined. He's aglow in winning national awards for his pictures, lofty kudos for being in the right place in the middle of nowhere in the dead of night.

Pacholka shoots celestial events — comets, close visits by other planets, meteor showers and the occasional Milky Way cluster — with our national parks and other down-to-earth scenery gracing the foregrounds of his frames.

Ventura County Star Not exactly an original pursuit to anyone who recalls the 1960 Ansel Adams masterpiece "Moon and Half Dome," but the freelance astrophotographer does it well, too. Pacholka is a three-time "Picture of the Year" winner for Time and Life magazines' end-of-year photograph editions. Both magazines honored him in 2003 for shots he took when Mars made its closest pass to Earth in almost 60,000 years, and Time also tabbed him in 1997 for a picture he took of Comet Hale-Bopp above Joshua Tree National Park.

National Geographic also has used several of his shots, and NASA has shown more than two dozen of his images, including 22 of them as the "Astronomy Picture of the Day" on its Web site.

The 57-year-old Long Beach resident left accounting three years ago and now focuses full time on his passion — sayonara book ledgers and hello rocky ledges, the kind on which he can mount his camera tripod and await the majesty of the heavens.

Green Tie Affair - Art Exhibit Featured Artists - Roger Webb

The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will be hosting its Green Tie Affair in celebration of its 40th Anniversary. The art exhibit for the event will start May 21 and will conclude on June 2, the evening of the event. Many talented local artists will have their works on display.

ROGER WEBB

Roger Webb is an award-winning animator, set designer and fine artist. Acclaimed studios such as Cartoon Network, Hanna-Barbera, Warner Brothers and Disney have all commissioned Roger’s brilliant color designs for hit shows: Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, and Star War's animated miniseries Clone Wars.

While touring Europe, Roger designed sets exclusively for international Dance Choreographer, Jacque Heim and his modern, acrobatic dance company, Diavolo Dance Theater. Roger enhanced the show’s captivating brilliance by creating moving set pieces, such as a massive staircase for the dancers to display brazen choreography. This award-winning staircase contained hidden doors and hinged steps that opened like a live version of an Escher drawing. For this and other inspired designs, Roger won two consecutive Lester Horton Dance Awards.

The son of a Naval Officer, Roger grew up playing sports in San Diego, California. Art was always present in his life, but it wasn’t until he saw Walt Disney’s, Fantasia, that his mind was opened to art and animation as a way of life. Roger received his art education at California Institute of the Arts, and as a student in the School of Character Animation, he was continually driven by the impact of that first viewing of Disney's, Fantasia. While at Cal Arts, the lure of the paintbrush proved irresistible, and he proceeded to experiment with his chosen medium. A loose curriculum and an attentive mentor enabled him to learn techniques and skills that translate easily between animation and fine art.

As a painter, Roger Webb is an emerging force on the Los Angeles fine art scene, inspired by the native California experience and travels abroad. He has participated in numerous art auctions benefitting the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Burbank Family Services and CARE Cottages. And has progressed into bigger galleries such as M Modern in Palm Springs, California. He has also established a new Art show called, "Art Mitzvah" to promote fresh artists and their work to a community where they would otherwise be overlooked. This in
novative young artist has already gained great praise for his long and colorful compositions, as well as his strong animated style. With his art, Roger intends to create a bridge between art as therapy for the artist, and art as therapy for the community.

Green Tie Affair - Art Exhibit Featured Artists - Daniel Oropeza

The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will be hosting its Green Tie Affair in celebration of its 40th Anniversary. The art exhibit for the event will start May 21 and will conclude on June 2, the evening of the event. Many talented local artists will have their works on display.

DANIEL OROPEZA

Daniel's maverick style of thinking, working and creating has brought forth a new medium. As a master of creating textures Daniel's deeply moving soulful sense of beauty, combined with his scientific fascination, has taken this artist wherever his imagination could go. Welding and experimenting with the liquidity of steel is where his vision began. He said to himself " seemed like everything had to get hot first". Daniel was not interested in doing what others had done or, in his opinion, had already mastered. He was following a way of being inside his thread of interests, even his mistakes, for these too became paths to creative possibilities. Being told what couldn't and shouldn't be possible, fueled his focus to experiment. The addition of glass became his new frontier. How do you fuse glass to metal, shape it before it cools, weld all the pieces together with bronze, without cracking the glass and capturing the varying intense colors of red.

Daniel's imagination and talent resulted in yet another new technique. Even now seventeen years later, he is in his studio in Costa Mesa, California, imagining and creating his next self-imposed challenge.. He calls his artwork " Organic Elegance". While the photos of his sculptures are magnificent, they do not come close to the ineffable feeling of being in the presence of his art.

The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will be hosting its Green Tie Affair in celebration of its 40th Anniversary. The art exhibit for the event will start May 21 and will conclude on June 2, the evening of the event. Many talented local artists will have their works on display.

DEAN WEYGAND

Born and raised on the Southern California Coast Dean Weygand’s influences come from living near and on water. His focus has always been on the world outside his front door through travel, reading and multiple forms of creative communications.

By trade he has been a Graphic Designer for over 16 years achieving Senior and Creative Director status in the past 5 years. Professional positions have also included Illustration, professional photography and is now the owner of DN (DEAN STATEMENT APPAREL).

All artwork is done from a mixed media of Inks and paints as well as various types of modeling mediums.

He believes in all forms of expression and respects and enjoys being a part of a creative heritage but will drop all artwork in a second for a day at the beach or road trip... “if art needs inspiration, what better way to get it?!”

He firmly believes that; “Art can be taught, but only one who truly loves the arts can appreciate that creative expression isn’t guided by lessons in a room, but by the experience of living, respect and a desire to communicate any particular environment”.

ENC Spring Faire 2012 Featured Artists - Raymond Otis

Raymond is most interested in capturing the qualities of light, color and form that create a strong natural atmosphere filled with little surprises of detail and texture.

As a boy, Raymond's life-long interest in boating, seaports & lighthouses started when his family moved on their boat, the "Grandvill-e", from Maryland to Florida down the Inter-coastal Waterway.

Raymond has sketched and painted ever since winning his first blue ribbon as a youth for a pastel of a sailfish.

Raymond's interest in the outdoors started during his days Boy Scouting, Sea Scouting and being in the Civil Air Patrol.

Learning to fly gives Raymond an added advantage for aerial paintings.

Lumberjacking in the Redwoods of Northern California helped Raymond pay his way through college and gave birth to a desire for painting our State and National Parks.

ENC Spring Faire 2012 Featured Artists - Jill Rosoff

Jill Rosoff paints her silk scarves using permanent dye, taking advantage of her love of color and shapes as she develops the designs just for these pieces of wearable art. All of her scarves are hand-painted, and signed and numbered.

Ms. Rosoff primarily works in watercolors, exploring their intrinsic painterly qualities, using them in ways that diverge from prescribed styles of using them. She experiments in contrasts: textures against flat color blocks, cool vs. warm, dark to light, messier areas against simple, clean ones, and opposites on the color wheel. Her images feature her signature warm, jewel-toned palette, and are inspired by her surroundings and her travels throughout the world, especially in Europe, the Americas and the South Pacific.

“I have been an artist pretty much my whole life. From an early age color delighted me. In every the mediums I’ve worked in, I am always happiest when I’m making art. There is grandeur and simplicity found in both natural and man-made forms. I strive to recognize the elegance in an object’s form, the grace of a flower stem, the convolution of a leaf, and the colors that make them so wonderful and sensual.”

Ms. Rosoff studied at the University of California, Berkeley. She received her Bachelors degree from Berkeley in Painting and Drawing followed by graduate work studying printmaking in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited her work for over 25 years in solo shows, group shows and in alternative spaces. She holds watercolor workshops for anyone wanting to learn to paint with watercolors.

Note from the artist: In Honor of all the internal gifts I've received in Nature - Today I am donating 10% of all my proceeds to: The California State Park Foundation, Yosemite Conservancy, and The Sierra Club.

Patricia Gray's Artist Statement: Ever since I was young, it seems that I have always beencreative. Whether, picking up watercolor 20 years ago, remodeling kitchens, redecorating homes, creating gardens, writing professionally or currently trying new Mixed Media techniques, I have always had a need to have my creativity come out in one way or another.

If I had to pinpoint my process, the central theme has always been, take something or a place, re-work it and make it beautiful. That’s exactly what’s exciting me about design and my current Upcycle Art. I can take something that just needs a little TLC and hopefully make it shine. I am deeply inspired by Nature and Buddhism, specifically the complex designs and sounds of Tibetan Buddhism. When I work with paint I am reminded that everything is fluid. When I work with rocks, I am reminded that things are solid. When I work with a black piece of tile, I am enthusiastic about how the design and colors I choose will change its blank appearance – as we can do in our lives, we create it.

I am reminded of that every time I work with a piece. I begin a work of art by looking at the item for a few minutes, whether it’s a vase, rock or blank canvas, then images flood my mind and then I start. I know a piece is done when I have to pull myself away from it and say enough is enough. This is still an area I struggle with.

When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of harmony, peace and a big smile. When people see my work, I'd like them to be honest, whether they like it or not. I can always take something away from how each person perceives and interprets my art. My philosophy is that I am here to learn and I am constantly evolving from each piece or technique that I use.

ENC Spring Faire 2012 Featured Artists - Sylvia Marson

Sylvia Marson's Gourd Art – “I love the whole process of growing, cleaning, cutting, wood burning and carving gourds. They are natures substitute for wood and I can create a beautiful object of art by transforming a dirty, moldy ornamental plant into something shiny and beautiful. I’m an environmental, health & safety professional by trade and an artist by heart. I started working with gourds around 1996 when I took my first class and was hooked. There is an old legend that says: If you give or receive a gourd, with it goes all the best in life – health, happiness and other good things. Gourds have been used by many cultures for thousands of years. Now I hope you enjoy my gourd art and pass it on. Good things will come”.
Sylvia Marson works in Costa Mesa, CA and spends weekends and holidays in Morro Bay. Her gourd art is also sold at the Muth Interpretive Center and the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. Take a calling card, visit her website and enjoy the photos of her gourd art.

Henna is a flowering plant (Lawsonia Alba) that has been used for over 6,000 years to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather, silk, and wool. After making the henna leaves into a dry powder, it is mixed with lemon juice, strong tea, or other mildly acidic liquids to make a paste-like compound, which then can be used to make the finely detailed body art.

What was once primarily a wedding tradition that would involve the application of henna in a ceremonial way, is becoming an everyday treat in America due to its health benefits and temporary attributes.

For more information about the workshop, contact Sama Wareh at the ENC at 949-645-8489.

Bring Out the Butterflies

Want to spend some time enjoying the butterflies in our Butterfly House, while teaching others about these important animals?

Butterfly House Docents help monitor the butterfly house, greet the public, provide casual interpretation, clarify rules and answer questions. Docents commit to volunteer approximately three hours per month or more if desired, during butterfly season (May through October). Docents staff the House on Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM or from 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM. Weekday docents are occasionally needed.

Docents must complete the Butterfly Docent training workshop, offered at the Environmental Nature Center or posses similar training or experience. Training includes an overview of frequently asked questions, a description of the host and nectar plants in the ENC’s butterfly house, and the butterflies likely to be found in the House over the coming season.

This Saturday, April 7th, the ENC is hosting a butterfly house docent training session at 10 to 12 AM. Docents will view a 1.5 hour presentation, and tour the ENC’s butterfly house.

Call Lori at 949-645-8489 ext 103 or email Lori to RSVP or inquire for information about training.

See you there!

Spring Break Camp is Finally Here!

The environmental nature center is once again offering its annual spring break camp from April 9-12. Featuring an array of fun activities tailored for young children in grades K – 6th grade, this year’s Spring Break Camp will highlight the themes “Wonderful Water,” “Habitat Heroes,” and “Science Cuisine.” Camp is from 9AM to 1PM, and “After Camp” is offered from 1-3PM

Spring Break Themes @ ENC:

Habitat Heroes - Campers will get involved in all the ways one can help out our planet Earth. Through hands-on games, eco-friendly crafts and exciting experiments, kids will learn about all 5 R’s, our friends the decomposers, discover some ways to help endangered species, and bust some non-natives.

Wonderful Water - Campers will immerse themselves in the wonders of water as they take a voyage through the water cycle, travel through time with “Freddy the Fish”, and fly with the “Birds of the Air” along the Pacific Flyway. Campers will become water connoisseurs and more during this fun week of water wisdom.

Science Cuisine - Campers will spend the week learning about the sensational science of food. They will experiment, concoct, measure and taste their way through food experiments to learn more about edibles and the science behind all that we consume.

After Camp: Space Cadets (3-6th grade)

Campers will join Naturalist Alex Lane in building, playing, and working to better understand the unknown frontiers of space. They will explore facts about space, experiment with gravity, build some "space bound" vehicles, and create their own constellations.

After Camp: Eco-Fun (K – 2nd grade)

Campers will become scientists and conduct experiments to test the world around them. They will test air, water, plants and soil. At the culmination of the week, campers will create their very own “mini forest” in a jar to take home to show family and friends.

Environmental Nature Center gets Electrified!

The Environmental Nature Center recently installed an Electric Vehicle Charging Station, and purchased an Electric Vehicle (EV) to be used as an eco-friendly mode of transportation for its Traveling Naturalist.

The ENC is celebrating 40 years of providing quality education through hands on experience with nature. To celebrate this milestone, the ENC purchased an EV for its new Traveling Naturalist program, which conducts off site environmental education programs at schools and for community groups.

"Over the last 40 years, the ENC has served as our community's foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education,” Bo Glover, Executive Director said. "The ENC is committed to promoting sustainability. The vehicle and charging station will launch the ENC into a new era, and inspire others to protect the natural world.”

The ENC purchased a new Ford Transit Connect Electric van that can travel up to 80 miles on a single charge, and can be r
echarged using either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet. A motivating factor for the ENC was the opportunity to reduce its impact on the environment by recharging the vehicle using the energy obtained from solar panels at its facility.

“I think it’s great that we’re able to ‘practice what we preach’ when it comes to being green and sustainable,” said ENC Traveling Naturalist Sama Wareh, who also designed the wrap for the new vehicle. “As I’m driving to schools, loaded up with hawks, owls, snakes and tarantulas, I feel proud knowing that my vehicle is producing zero emissions. When I plug in at schools I feel like I’m setting a positive example and educating people through my actions!”

The charging station accommodates two vehicles. One of the spaces will be designated for the ENC’s charging needs, while the other will be made available to Center visitors and community members.

With approximately 20 other charging stations located throughout Orange County, the ENC will be joining the effort of providing a recharging destination for drivers that have opted for an eco-friendly vehicle powered by electricity rather than gasoline. The ENC encourages local residents to come by the center for a refill of nature and electricity.

Staying Green with LEEDing Technology

Corona del Mar High School student Julia Kerr recently interviewed our Director of Education Lori Whalen for a paper she's doing on green building. Here it is:

Julia: Where do you think green construction is going in the future?

Lori: I think that the standards developed by the US Green Building Council - LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification - will become mandatory for new construction in things like recycling or sourcing a certain amount of materials locally. Hopefully, this will also include clean water and energy efficiency as well. Frankly, years and years down the line, I foresee a law stating that NO water can be used on landscaping at all, requiring homeowners and businesses to only use locally native plants that are adaptable to the climate & geography of an area.

Julia: How do you think all construction projects could become "greener"?

Lori: I think the best way for new construction to be green is to use land that is already being used. No new construction should occur on open space, ever. We should be building UP, not out, incorporating elements of “New Urbanism” in modern development, to revitalize our old downtowns and “Main Street USA’s” in the hopes of creating neighborhoods where people would want to live AND work. New Urbanism basically promotes walkable neighborhoods, in cities that use sustainable methods of expansion. This was the way cities grew before everyone had a car. We should be able to walk to the market and bike to the movie theatre, thrift store, park, etc. And with the growing awareness of environmental sustainability, people have begun to make an impact. The USGBC, for example, has a new "LEED for Neighborhood Development Rating System" that integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building into the first national system for neighborhood design.

Julia: How have green technology and the understanding of how we can work with our environment, changed environmentally-friendly construction or construction in general?

Lori: Well, the technologies are definitely out there to make buildings more green, but the common misconception is that they are too expensive for "regular people" to implement. In some cases this might be true, but in many cases it is not. Sometimes, the drivers holding back such an initiative are silly things like immobility. For example, my homeowners association will not allow homeowners to install solar panels because they are concerned that they might be visually unappealing. My response? Pollution from power plants supplying us with dirty energy is visually unappealing. Oil spills are visually unappealing and so is mountaintop removal mining for coal. The kids we teach here at the ENC understand this concept! Nonetheless, technologies are improving all the time and the building industry is implementing them, slowly but surely. Honestly, I think the building industry is making positive changes WAY faster than many individuals are. Everyone should be using a re-usable water bottle and coffee cups. Everyone should be using re-usable shopping bags. Everyone should be refusing Styrofoam and plastic containers. Alternatives are always available. Support those that have implemented them! These are just tiny changes that everyone can implement NOW, and there are no excuses!

Julia: How much more does it cost initially to build a “green” building verses a regular building?

Lori: To become LEED Certified, it requires no additional cost, because California’s standards on energy efficiency are stringent enough to make any new building certifiable. To move to Silver, it requires an additional 2%, Gold another 5-10%, and Platinum another 15-20%. The ENC building is certified LEED Platinum, the highest certification you can receive.

Julia: What are the most common ways of making a building green?

Lori: I've already mentioned some like using recycled or renewable resources and sourcing materials locally. In addition, there are other ways to make “green” buildings including recycling construction waste, using light colors to minimize the “heat island effect,” relying on renewable energy, implementing water conservation methods, using natural ventilation, and also alternative transportation. The ENC, for example, has parking spots for alternative-fuel vehicles and for those who carpool (We just installed an ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATION!)

Julia: In your opinion, what are the best building materials for reducing the environmental impact of construction?

Lori: The best building materials are simply the ones that are recycled, like our shelving made from sunflower seed shells, or our insulation made from recycled cotton denim.

After having learned how ENC promotes and incorporates LEEDing technology and construction, what are your thoughts on green building and how we can go about in achieving environmental sustainability?
